Twelve Tips of Christmas: Tip 10: Turning Brass

Most engineers know that when you turn brass the needle like chipping’s that come off will cover you and your workshop in a split second if you do not have a fully enclosed machine, or a close fitting chick guard..

There are 2 ways, or more accurately 1 way with 2 variations that I know to avoid the brass shower…

  1. Use a left hand style turning tool, mounted in the tool post upside down and run the spindle in reverse, causing all the chipping’s to fly into the machine tray.
  2. Use a standard turning tool, mounted upside down in a rear tool post and run the spindle in the usual direction, again causing the chipping to fly into the machine tray.
I know, the solutions are pretty basic, but they both work…..
